The
Quarter 40 racing class grew out of the ashes of the now defunct
Formula 1 class. Racing in Calgary is to AMA
422 rules. Airframes are semi scale and are capable of speeds
well over 200mph.
All racers use the Nelson Q40 motor and tuned muffler in a variety
of airframes. Many of the most competitive airframes are built
by Harold
Sattler of North Battleford.
One Q40 race is held in Calgary each year, usually in early June.
Other races in the district are organised by the CPPRA
(Canadian Prairie Pylon Racing Association). Calgary pilots are
frequently among the top positions.
Each year in February, several Calgary racers make the trip to
Phoenix, Arizona for the JR Gold Cup race. In 2003, Jim Henderson
was the top placed Calgary pilot managing ninth place against
some very stiff international competition.
